Speck Fishing with MLF Pro Terry Scroggins

Big Show told us to come visit and we’ll take a tour of his best spots for speck fishing. We listened and boy did we put the MHX Spinning Series to work.

Every spot had its own unique set of challenges, yet our range of custom spinning rods were built to solve each puzzle. For example, skipping small jigs into tight windows under a dock or pitching accurately around pilings without snagging is easier said than done.

Scroggins prefers ultralight rods with lengths between 5’6” and 6’6” because you can cast it anywhere you need to reach stacks of speck. Shorter models, like the 5’6” S661-MHX and the 6’0” S721-MHX are excellent for shooting and skipping as far as possible underneath docks.

Loading up the rod and skipping the jig perfectly underneath the dock leads to the line where the shade meets the sunlight.

Once the jig would land just past that line, you could feel it sink down and one of those dock dwelling fish would snatch it up. The bites were overwhelming at this point, and the fun had only just begun.

At the spots with pilings, we turned to the longer 6’6” S781-MHX model for pinpoint casting accuracy while the trolling motor kept us in range. The S781-MHX rod blank is also available in 14 color options that are excellent for custom rod building!

MHX Metallic Colors include:

… as well as Slate and White options!

Using small jigs, light line, and performance driven rod blanks designed to pair perfectly with the requirements of this application, we filled up two live wells with dinner for the night.

Not only did we stay on the crappie bite all day, but we also capped off the night with an awesome fish fry hosted by the man himself. In addition to his skills as a professional fisherman, Scroggins is a top-notch cook and even better host.

Big Show even made his signature datil pepper sauce. There were no leftovers, but plenty of laughs as we shared stories of the action and relived all the ultralight fun from our day on the water.
